BMC artificial ponds and immersion points for your household Ganpati.

Artificial ponds keep the sea, lakes and rivers cleaner. Using one near home also keeps you out of the big crowds at the beaches.

This is from 2025. The 2026 details may differ, so check the official source before relying on it.

Rules for household idols

  • BMC says that, as per High Court orders, Ganesh idols under six feet in height must be immersed in artificial ponds during Ganeshotsav 2026.[3]
  • POP idols up to six feet may be immersed in artificial ponds and POP idols taller than six feet may be immersed in the sea, until the Bombay High Court delivers its final verdict.[4]
  • 2025Household POP idols, and all other idols under six feet in height, are to be immersed only in artificial ponds (Maharashtra government guidelines).[2]
  • 2025Public mandals' idols taller than six feet may be immersed in natural water bodies if no other immersion option is available; the local body must collect the immersed material the next day.[2]
  • 2025Makers and sellers of POP idols must mark a clearly visible red circle in oil paint on the back of the idol.[2]
  • 2025BMC appeals to citizens to finish the pre-immersion puja and aarti at home, avoid crowding, and hand the idol in at a collection centre or immerse it in an artificial pond.[2]
  • 2025At natural immersion sites, artificial ponds and idol collection centres you can hand your idol to the BMC staff present, who will then immerse it respectfully on BMC's behalf.[2]
  • 2025Mobile immersion sites and idol collection centres are also set up at ward level.[2]
  • 2025Boards showing high and low tide times and wave heights are displayed at chowpatty immersion points; follow the instructions given there by BMC and the police.[2]
  • 2025Put nirmalya (flower offerings) only in the nirmalya kalash bins provided at immersion sites and avoid using plastic bags; BMC turns the nirmalya into compost.[2]
